This was a two-night stopover on the way to New Zealand. I was so jet-lagged that I didn't do much. But the view from the apartment was superb and the Harbour Cruise convinced me that Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Sydney Harbour (84K)We stayed in the Quay West Apartments. This was the view from the living room window; it has to be the best view in Sydney. No need to identify the bridge or the white structure on the right! |

The Rocks (79K)The Rocks is a preserved village right at the foot of the south of end of Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was the point where the first Europeans landed and therefore represents the beginning of modern Australian. At one time The Rocks had deteriorated to a slum district, but has been redeveloped and is now a "sought after" residential district. One of Sydney City Rail's new double-decker trains can be seen crossing the Bridge. |

Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay (64K)Zooming in now on the unmistakable Opera House. Circular Quay is the area to the right of the picture where ferries and cruise boats dock. The ferries provide commuter transport to many suburbs bordering the Harbour which covers a huge area. Note the double-ended ferry in the centre of the picture. Making the ferries double-ended not only saves the time taken to turn the ship at the start of each journey - it also halves the design cost, as only half a ship needs to be designed... |

Another Sydney Bridge (24K)Sydney is a wonderful place for students of bridge architecture. Besides the famous Harbour Bridge there are numerous other bridges spanning the various rivers that drain into the Harbour. Here's one example. |
|
Sydney City Centre from the Harbour (69K)This is the view that you might get from a ferry approaching Circular Quay. High-rise office blocks form a dramatic backdrop. To the left are the docks of Circular Quay itself; in the centre is The Rocks and to the right is the southern approach to the Harbour Bridge. |

Fairground, North Sydney (30K)This is the view from the Harbour of the area just to the west of the north end of the Harbour Bridge. The huge face smiles at water-borne commuters. The northern approach to the Bridge is just visible to the right. |

Sydney North Shore (30K)Some of the magnificent properties to be seen on the north shore of Sydney Harbour. |
